With all of the different shots in golf, one of my favorites is the punch shot, or knockdown shot as it’s also known as. It allows you to be a little creative and it can also secure you out of some tight spots.

The punch shot is hit with an abbreviated swing. You’ll only take a puny backswing and finish with a very abrupt and abbreviated follow through. Why is this type of golf shot significant?

PGA pros hit punch shots in all types of situations including:

-The ball is lying next to or under a tree or other similar obstruction which prevents them from being able to hold a full swing.

-The wind is blowing very hard in their face so they need to keep the ball down, instead of hitting it high in the air.

-The need to reduce the amount of spring on the shot. The more chase on the ball, the harder it is to control.

-When you’re in between clubs and you need to control your distance.

A safe example of this happens all the time with the pros. How many times have you watched one of them hit a wedge onto the green only to see it spin all the blueprint back off? It happens constantly. By hitting a punch shot or knockdown wedge, you eliminate most all of the spin, preventing the ball from coming relieve like that.

How do you hit this golf shot?

Hitting a punch shot will win a slight practice. The most difficult part is judging the distance with each club.

You’ll want to play the ball wait on in your stance to support keep it down. Your hands should be well forward to also succor in decreasing the loft of the club and keep the ball down.

The backswing is abbreviated, with your hands going no more than shoulder high and finishing no more than shoulder high during your follow through.

If you want to add this shot to your golf game I suggest you hit the practice range a few times first. Experiment with your 7 iron-PW. Get a good feel for the shot and how far the ball goes. Then you can try it out during your round. You’ll soon find that this shot can be quite beneficial for your golf game.
